About Weaver Selina:
Weaver Selina is silver overlay jeweler with over 40 years of experience and a member of the Hopi Tribe, born of the Sunforehead Clan from the village of Shungopavi, Arizona. He acquired the basic knowledge and skills of Hopi silver craftmanship through study with the local Master Craftsmen Instructors Bernard Dawahoya, Eldon James, and Manuel Poseyesva. Much of his work is a credit to these men who taught the art of silversmithing at "The Hopi Crafts Shop" in Kykotsmovi, Arizona. Silver overlay jewelry is distinctive of Hopi silversmiths and is made by tracing a design on a sheet of silver and then cutting it out by hand with a jeweler's saw. That sheet of silver is then soldered onto another piece of silver. The open areas on the bottom layer are textured using a small punch and hammer. The assembled piece is trimmed, contoured, hammered into final form, and the design oxidized to produce the beautiful shadows and shadings. The final step is to buff the top surface to either a matte satin finish or bright polish.
